Column: Singin’ the Ann Arbor Blues

on Friday August 1 1969. ver the next two days attendees would be treated to nearly 24 solid hours of the best and most authentic blues music the country had to offer old and new from country blues to city blues and everything in between. Some reviewers had minor complaints about one or two of the performances but overall critical opinion was glowing. Norman Gibson of The Ann Arbor News perhaps summed it up best writing simply that ?the first Ann Arbor Blues Festival in history was a success from almost any point of view and those who arranged it can be proud of the results. ?The audience was if anything even more enthusiastic than the experts. Many performers received heartfelt standing ovations and the moving quiet performance by the venerable Son House that closed the festival brought tears to the eyes of many.

Blues Blue Berry Jam Steve Rowe and the Late Night Blues Band to name just a few. Lachute en Blues has rented the Lachute fairgrounds and will be performing on a large stage that belongs to the Knights of Columbus. ?We have incorporated extra stages so that the artists can come off the main stage and be right in the middle of the crowd? Lachute en Blues director and musician Brian Tyler said. In order to accommodate as many people as possible and to involve the community of Lachute additional performances will also taking place in some of Lachute?s many bars and restaurants.

But earnest academic debate will give way to good times at the Fold eco cafe later in the evening with a host of well-known fingerstyle guitarists fiddle and banjo players putting the theory into action. Dr Jill Terry head of English and Cultural Studies said: ?This event will bring together some of the world?s leading authorities on American roots music in one place. ?They will be examining the impact and significance of American Folk and Blues music in Britain and British influences on US styles. But it will not just be an academic event there will be live music in the evening which anyone interested in Blues and Folk music will enjoy. ? Music fills ptimist Park during annual festival

Fans from all over Idaho flocked to the park to check out their favorite artists and listen to some vintage blues music. The artists on this year’s bill included returning artists T-Model Ford Bill Abel Robert Belfour the B-3 Side and the Love Abiding Church. They were joined by local artists John Nemeth and the BoDo Brothers. Plans are currently in the works for next year’s festival but according to Bryant among the many options discussed include taking the festival to Boise. According to Bryant a personal goal for next year’s festival is to bring back Belfour and Ford and join them with Cadillac John a previous festival performer to perform on stage for the first time.
