Dylan it’s less of an obstacle than an opportunity to reframe. In his pugnacious sprightly and often invigorating hour-plus set the shape of songs was far more important than the meaning. He took ownership of several decades of American music: “Thunder on the Mountain” was a fast blues “Lonesome Day Blues” had slight Cajun touches and “Like a Rolling Stone” brandished flashes of gospel and even pop-country. The rain had become mist by the time Mr. Dylan emerged though that didn’t stop him from playing a rollicking version of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” or from making slight water-themed tweaks to “Workingman’s Blues #2” (“It’s raining so hard you could drown” which was the mostly clearly enunciated lyric of the night). Mostly his act was one of defiance; though he began the night with a pair of songs on guitar Mr. Dylan stood and mainly played keyboard with a feisty presence.
