But the wide smile is the same. If you needed further proof that Ball isn’t afraid of her age — she’s 60 — she threw a big birthday party this year to raise money for ongoing Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts in New rleans. That’s one reason of many that she loves the blues — the music allows its masters to age gracefully. Many of them in fact still tour into their 80s. So playing the blues Ball not only doesn’t mind her age she relishes it. “I wanted to have a career you could have your whole life” she said. “I didn’t want to be washed up in my 30s.

That music was speaking to us and we could find some kind of spitting images of our own African music. We got inspired to meld their ingredients to our own music. The influences are partly the tradition of Malian blues but also influences we got from listening to a lot of those bands. A lot of people coming to your music don’t understand the French lyrics. They just like the sound. Does it bother you that they’re missing the messages? It doesn’t really annoy us.

It just happened to work out that Mueller keyboardist Alex Shakeri and drummer Dave Melyan liked playing new songs in an old tradition. In the three years the Insomniacs have been playing out the band has released two full-length albums. The group captured a nomination for best new artist debut at the 2008 Blues Music Awards and won best contemporary blues act from the Cascade Blues Association in 2007. Part of the acclaim could come from The Insomniacs? renewed focus on blues lyrics and tight arrangements Mueller said. ?I think it creates a lot of interest for me. What I think it does is it keeps people from getting bored. We have to entertain somebody for three hours at a time and when you?ve got a band and you?ve got arrangements it?s a bit more of a show? he said.
