Friday night the C-Note in Hull hosted New England blues veteran James Montgomery and his band with guest guitarist J. The sold-out show featured mostly blues classics with a dollop of hits from the J. Geils Band that takes its name from the guitarist (who’s actually Jerome “Jay” Geils).

Following his departure from the band Bennett released five mostly under-the-radar solo albums including his most recent 2006′s Whatever Happened I Apologize. Shannon Street Blues & Heritage Festival 2009Like an electric blues note lingering upon the air the Shannon Street Blues Festival events in downtown Jackson now begin the first week of May and run through June 6. “We’ve taken a fresh approach every year” said Jill Mendoza executive director of Jackson Downtown Development Corporation which hosts the festival as their largest fundraiser. Mendoza said a good community event offers eclectic music with artists from a wide range in the blues genre. The 2009 artists’ lineup ranges “from folk very blues very insrumental. ” Michael Baker recruits the talent each year. Magi will close out Friday night and the Saturday night headliner is Preston Shannon who’s been nominated for several Grammy awards.

To be fair the organizers did make some small progress this year in diversifying the lineup.
