Shannon Street Blues & Heritage Festival 2009Like an electric blues note lingering upon the air the Shannon Street Blues Festival events in downtown Jackson now begin the first week of May and run through June 6. “We’ve taken a fresh approach every year” said Jill Mendoza executive director of Jackson Downtown Development Corporation which hosts the festival as their largest fundraiser. Mendoza said a good community event offers eclectic music with artists from a wide range in the blues genre. The 2009 artists’ lineup ranges “from folk very blues very insrumental. ” Michael Baker recruits the talent each year. Magi will close out Friday night and the Saturday night headliner is Preston Shannon who’s been nominated for several Grammy awards.

Louis and Live on the Levee series has been announced by presenting organization. Louis and once again our town’s indigenous musical forms of jazz and blues have been snubbed. To be fair the organizers did make some small progress this year in diversifying the lineup. Booking seminal alt-rockers Sonic Youth who will appear on July 17 demonstrates a certain degree of risk-taking mostly unseen in recent years. (Mind you what’s considered “risky” in St. Louis might be rather mundane elsewhere.

It’s an educational enrichment program designed to bring one of our country’s first music forms to the kids either in classroom settings after school programs or community events. In this program professional blues musicians are invited into schools to conduct classes on the history of the blues famous blues musicians different styles of blues and how to write sing and perform the blues. field hollers work songs etc. to its current popularity. Through song lecture and discussion students learn the history of the Blues while hearing instrumental examples played on guitar harmonicas or other instruments.
Jay Bennett ex-member of band Wilco dies at 45

Bennett sued for breach of contract contending that he was owed royalties from his work on Wilco albums as well as money from the film. The suit has not been settled a Wilco spokeswoman said. After his split with Wilco Bennett released four albums solo and with Burch has done production work for other artists including a 2005 album by Blues Traveler. The Chicago Tribune contributed to this report.
