These days however he spends most of his time creating music while occasionally joining the Gglitch with his harmonica. Skinner praises such musical acts as Bela Fleck whom he considers one of the world?s unrivaled banjo players. He also relishes the soulful richness of ?old old blues music of the ?30s and ?40s. ? In general however he admits to being a bit ?musically ignorant. ? He prefers to spend time developing his own sound and enjoys combining country with blues. ?I?ve always thought that music like country or gospel tells people how to be good or how they are supposed to treat other people? Skinner said. ?I find with blues music it?s the opposite.

I let people put me where they want. I do not believe in genres. "I’ve always been drawn to blues music spirituals old original forms of North American music. And when I started singing that’s where my voice fit. I like Motown but I’m fascinated with the concepts of simplicity and movement and emotion and then in turn trying to create music that twists and bends in ways that are unexpected. "I’m hoping one day to create a new form of blues a more contemporary form that’s unique and original as that music was when it was beginning. " What would you call it? "Music for grownups.

He’s been a large part of the music scene in St. Catharines for years with his band Attic Daddy in the late 80s and 90s. He’s stripped back to a one-man show called Major Chords and performs his original blues music. “I do an older country-blues with a lot of scraping and stomping and moaning and all that” he said. “Lyrically it’s more of a Dain City blues instead of a Mississippi blues. “Richardson explained that there were a lot of local references found in his music and it’s these songs with a local bent that he’ll be performing at In The Soil festival. “I took it seriously that this was a local festival so I threw some songs into it and wrote a few others for it that was concerned with local ideas.

King will be on hand at the Blues Music Awards ceremony on May 7 in Memphis to present an award named in his honor the B. King Entertainer of the Year. Nominees for this award are Janiva Magness Watermelon Slim Bobby Rush Lil’ Ed and Magic Slim. This year’s awards ceremony and concert should be fantastic.

Rock Cut students learn about the blues

Nearly 300 third- through sixth-grade students listened today to Glenn Davis and “Westside” Andy Linderman play guitar drums and the harmonica as part of the Crossroads Blues Society. The society is a nonprofit organization that teaches students about the origins of music. Students hear music on the radio TV and the Internet Davis said and they don’t always know the roots of those sounds. It’s important for students to gain a perspective of how music has evolved Davis said.
