After 40 years Van Morrison reinvents Astral Weeks

Morrison’s amazing voice is mostly intact although it no longer soars as it did when he was 23 and first recorded the album. He gives the songs his full attention and when he connects the result is magical. Considering what Morrison has been doing for the past 20 years mostly turning out mediocre records of live shows skiffle songs blues or country-flavoured stuff Astral Weeks Live is cause for celebration. Astral Weeks was Morrison’s second solo album and these days it always turns up near the top of every best rock album list. And yet it flopped when it came out in 1968. The record company quickly gave up on it — there was no great single like "Brown Eyed Girl" to push on rock radio for one thing. Even Morrison’s fans seemed baffled by the mystical blend of blues jazz and folk.
