" But my favorite place to find W. Handy is in this clip from YouTube in which a contemporary music fan plays a Handy rchestra of Memphis 78 on a well-tuned vintage phonograph. These are not cheap habits — collecting vintage 78s and maintaining the equipment to play them — and it’s kind of wonderful to see the recording played at home as it would have been in Handy’s day. The song "Livery Street Blues" from 1917 sounds less like the brass bands Rozzo mentions and more like a novelty blues number intended to amuse: It features a funny sliding change from the trombone and one instrument — the violin? — impersonating a horse’s whinny.

in 1930 into a deeply religious family and raised in Bowling Green Virginia. His first taste of music was gospel but blues soon became his calling. After learning to play the alternating thumb and fingerpicking guitar style that defines Piedmont blues John began emulating the records he heard by Blind Boy Fuller Blind Blake Rev. Gary Davis and other early blues artists. Aside from playing blues John worked early on as a pro! fessional gospel singer carpenter and Atlantic fisherman. By the 1960s he was starting to make a living from his music.

Cain received four Blues Music Award nominations in 1987 for his debut album Late Night City Blues including Guitarist of the Year. He has since released eight other albums. The Carson Valley Arts Council is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit Nevada corporation dedicated to bringing high quality entertainment to the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe region. This year is the fifth anniversary of the Carson Valley Arts Council which has provided arts and culture opportunities and expanded public participation in the arts. The arts council operates through ticket sales private donations and public funding including the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Spectators can expect to see the area’s top surfers competing for $1000 in cash while soaking up the sun and the fantastic music from the Springing the Blues festival that is just footsteps away from the event. This year’s Surfing the Blues contest kicks off at the south end of the Jacksonville Beach Pier on Saturday morning with qualifying heats in 5 shortboard divisions including Boys 14 and under Juniors 17 and under pen Shortboard pen Women and the pen Pro Challenge. There is a $25 entry fee for amateurs and $100 for the pen Pro. With this popular contest offering huge crowds everyone is guaranteed to see some of the best surfers in the region.
