The block of range Ave and South Street was cut off from traffic and a stage was set in the middle of the road on the corner of Anderson and range. Thousands of people of all ages and stations in life filled the area in front of City Hall to dance drink and eat barbecued meat. It was actually kind of weird to see drunken citizens waving beer bottles in the air as they danced on the steps of city hall. Nonetheless it was peaceful good time for child and adult alike.

Changes are minimal — including plaster busts of blues legends along the walls and fancifully decorated shoes stuck to the ceilings as artwork. To one side of the ticketing area is the restaurant home to southern-inspired cuisine. Its walls and parts of the musical hall are adorned with folk art and memorabilia celebrating blues music. To the other is the three-level music hall. Floor seats at the House of Blues are sold as general admission tickets. Folks can also watch the concert by general admission at a second-floor balcony. The third-floor balcony holds numbered VIP boxes and stadium seating with panoramic views of the musical hall.

" According to Flower when she taught guitar students would ask her to play the song "Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and ut" by Eric Clapton but this song is originally a Bessie Smith song. Flower continued playing songs recorded by women who were recording during the early years of blues such as "Black Rat" a song by Memphis Minnie about "one of her many ex-husbands" and a medley of songs by Elizabeth Cotton. Cotton had her own style of guitar playing which is called cotton-picking. Cotton-picking is a self-taught upside down left-handed two-finger-picking style. Flower said that Cotton’s songs are "so beautiful and so simple. " Bessie Smith was a big influence on Flower who even wrote a song titled "Bessie Blues.
