Stony Plain Artists Garner Six Blues Music Award Nominations

Winners in all categories will be presented at the Blues Music Awards Show on May 7 2009 at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis Tennessee. Both Rory Block and Ronnie Earl received two nominations each. Five-time Blues Music Award- winner Block was nominated for ‘Acoustic Album of the Year’ for her new Blues Walkin’ Like a Man CD a tribute to the legendary Delta bluesman Son House; and as ‘Acoustic Artist of the Year. ‘ Ronnie Earl was nominated for ‘Best Guitarist ‘ an award he’s won twice before; and his new Hope Radio Sessions DVD was nominated for ‘DVD of the Year.

I couldn’t handle it” Bach said with a laugh. Denise has more acoustic classic rock covers and I have the Calcutta Rugs a rock and roll band opening the Blues Festival. “Dino’s raised nearly $10000 for the festival charities last year due in part to a highly successful Barbecue Rib “Burn off” held in a heated tent.

The lineup may be diverse but that doesn’t mean the new place will easily win over music fans skeptical of a venue they see as a big-box franchise. “A lot of people are put off by preconceived notions of what a House of Blues is” said Brad Searles whose popular website Bradley’s Almanac surveys the local music scene. “The challenge for them is to make people realize that it’s a House of Blues in name only. “Searles said the closing of Avalon definitely left a void in Boston’s nightlife that the House of Blues could fill if it pays attention to details like reasonable drink prices and a friendly staff. “It all depends on the first impression the first concert people see at the new House of Blues” he said. “It’s too bad they couldn’t have a separate venue for smaller acts.
