Maybe it’s the methodical drawn out blues chords (which works equally as well with both jazz and rock music) or it may be the sheer authenticity of the vocals. Whatever it is it’s a symptom that plagues more than just me. People just seem to be naturally drawn to blues music. Even those who couldn’t tell you the difference between Lightin’ Hopkins and Howlin’ Wolf or those who probably couldn’t name a blues artist off the top of their head if their lives depended on it will stand in awe in the presence of a well crafted blues or blues-rock song.

On the Chess compilation the song is represented by the original Bo Diddley recording of “I’m a Man. ” In that battle Wright deserves at least a tie with Diddley because his treatment has more of the power and lust of Waters’ rendition. Tie goes to the soundtrack. Beyoncé’s “At Last” and “I’d Rather Go Blind” versus Etta James’ recordings of the same tunes.

He frequently overdubs his pliant voice steeped in third-hand blues and soul into a multi-octave choir. More than anyone in the band he’s the reason Fall Out Boy’s songs ring out on the radio. The promising young cast on Sunday from the Manhattan School of Music’s Opera Theater included Jaclyn Bermudez as Elaine and Min Won Shin as Ruth. Thelma the woman from Hopper’s “Automat” becomes the usher in a particularly effective scene (inspired by his “Two on the Aisle”) in which most of the characters (including Estelle and her date) watch a Broadway show. In the final scene a dejected Joe (devastated that Ruth has stood him up) walks into a cafe and encounters Thelma: hints of a future love affair that could allow Hopper’s solitary characters to escape the lonely destiny he imposed on them.
