Letters from blues musicians Wilson befriended over the years such as Saffire-the Uppity Blues Women and the late modern harmonica master Paul deLay. The living room walls of the apartment he shares with Calvert is adorned with photos of blues legends Honeyboy Edwards Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and Pinetop Perkins and others. Wilson is the principal writer and music reviewer for the Billtown Blues Association’s newletter “Billtown Blue Notes” and a dedicated lover of the blues. But he is more than a blues fan. He has lived the rough and tumble life of a real-life blues man. Although he is not a musician few people are as dedicated to the blues as Wilson. He is doing what he can to keep the blues alive in Williamsport.

He met his wife Elizabeth Price in Henderson where he lived for nearly a decade beginning in the early 1890s. In his autobiography Handy wrote “I didn’t write any songs in Henderson but it was there I realized that experiences I had had things I had seen and heard could be set down in a kind of music characteristic of my race. There I learned to appreciate the music of my people — then the blues were born. For “the best Wednesday lineup in the history of the festival” the headliner for June 11 is Ronnie Baker Brooks who has played the Handy Fest before a couple of times but as the Saturday night headliner. He’ll be preceded by two other national acts Eddie Shaw and The Wolfgang and Ana Popovic as well as popular local band Hog Maw Blues Band starting at 4 p. “We can think of no better way to showcase the festival than by bringing back one of the greatest performers to ever hit the Handy stage to start off big on a Wednesday night” said music chairman Dorin Luck… On “Zydeco Night” June 12 red beans and rice andouille sausages bread pudding and other Cajun food will go on sale at Audubon Mill Park while Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band will perform. For the “Riverbank Blues Blast” on June 13 the lineup features Tad Robinson Zac Harmon and other acts to be announced. And for the “Java Blues Jam” on June 14 — the festival’s music finale — performers include Jimmy Duck Holmes BooBoo Davis The Organiks Alexis P. Suter Big James and the Chicago Playboys and Bernard Allison. The rest of the Handy Festival is pretty much business as usual but there are some things about the festival that always confuse people. Let’s see if we can simplify:n The festival officially begins on Saturday with the Taste of Henderson Barbecue. It’s a one-day blowout followed by a lull in the action until the following Wednesday June 11.
