“Jagger pal Scorsese was an ideal fit. The Stones fanatic whose films pulsate with the band’s songs is an old hand at music documentaries. After getting a taste as second-unit director on Woodstock he directed 1978′s The Last Waltz an episode of 2003′s 10-part The Blues and 2005′s No Direction Home for PBS. Scorsese however wasn’t keen on hauling 50 cameras to a Rio de Janeiro spectacle in front of 2 million fans. “I was better suited to do something more intimate in a smaller venue where I can get involved with each character and actually see how the Rolling Stones work” says Scorsese calling from the Boston set of Ashecliffe his adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island. “Every time I saw them in an arena I would wish I had a camera up close to film them in a way they’ve never been shot before. ” Initially indifferent Keith Richards perked up at the mention of Scorsese… “This is the most documented band in history besides The Beatles. We found 400 hours of archival material. You can ask them all the questions in the world including the one they’re asked all the time ‘How long are you going to continue performing?’ and what’s left is what was there at the start: the music. After 35 years of dodging the same question they still thrive on performing. Every song is a special piece of creative energy. “ne clip finds guitarist Ronnie Wood declaring himself superior to Richards. “He will say so at the peril of his life” Richards counters.

Between the cheap suds the quick jaunts from one room to the other and the constant churn of activity the process was exhausting and my notes were exceptionally chicken-scratchy. Still having written about bars in this space for almost six years I’ve gotten pretty good at deciphering my own hobbled scribbles:* “Welcome to every band from Madison Wis. I’m not sure what Zach meant – he did live in Madison for a while – so I’m assuming he meant there are a lot of blues-rock outfits out there with catchy songwriting strong musicianship and good hooks. * “Mormons gone bad. ” The frenetic garage trio I’m a Boy was dressed in white oxfords and ties and totally ripped up the stage like practiced rock stars. ne more song and I’m convinced guitarist Jimmy Nasi was going to smash an amp.
