He watched diners stop eating when Dexter Gordon returned from Europe and a succession of divas like Ella Fitzgerald and Pearl Bailey at the Royal York’s Imperial Room. Then after stints as Sunday editor deputy managing editor and foreign editor at the Star his off-duty passion became a full-time occupation as the paper’s drama and jazz critic. For five years before mandatory retirement in 2004 he was dubbed the Star’s music critic covering classical world and blues music as well as jazz. Now he writes for CDA and Performance magazines. Chapman’s attempt to slake an unquenchable jazz spirit and share it with his readers culminates tomorrow night when he accepts the Ken Page Lifetime Achievement Award "in recognition of exceptional individual contributions to the development and growth of jazz in Canada" at the annual National Jazz Awards dinner and show at the Palais Royale. The award usually goes to people in the business but it’s about the only honour left for the Canadian jazz community to give Chapman after naming him jazz journalist of the year five years running. We rehearsed some of the newer songs they were working on. I was just coming out of the Elvin Bishop Band where we were very much roots music ? blues and R&B gospel country. My roots were in R&B. When Starship called I thought ?Wow. How is this going to work? How am I going to fit into the context of the band?s music??Had you been a fan?I was never really a big fan of the Jefferson Starship. I knew about Jefferson Airplane and their classic hits in the ?60s and I heard some of the Starship stuff on the radio.
