This year’s P-Stomp kicked off Tuesday with dozens of eclectic vintage acts on three stages at the House of Blues. By far the most eagerly anticipated retro-hip show was helmed by legendary arranger Wardell “the Creole Beethoven” Quezergue who presented fresh arrangements for revived tunes by Tony Owens Tammy Lynn Jean Knight and Mac Rebennack aka Dr. Knight wowed the crowd with My Toot Toot and 1971 hit Mr. Big Stuff but it was Rebennack who delivered the coveted rarities first by playing electric guitar (the instrument he picked up in his teens) and then by unearthing some of his boogie-bopping pre-Night Tripper treasures including Storm Warning Carry On and Lights Out (the latter two were released in the late ’50s by New Orleans singer Jerry Byrne).

The Anchor Pub 1001 Hewitt Ave. : The Rock-A-Billy Thunder event includes 10 rockabilly bands over two days plus a May 16 “rattle can” car show… : Little Big Man plays reggae. Tailgater Joe’s 1805 Hewitt Ave. : The Lloyd Jones Struggle a Portland guitarist plays blues. “Get lost in the triangle. You may be hearing that catchphrase more in coming months — or even years — as a group of Everett businessmen launch a jointly funded marketing strategy to create a new identity for downtown after dark. Joel Starr owner of Tailgater Joe’s and Lee Trautman manager of PC’s Pub lit upon their Hewitt Triangle slogan several months ago while brainstorming over a few beers about how to pump energy into the city’s nightlife. “I want to create some excitement for downtown Everett” said Starr who sees Seattle’s Pioneer Square as a model for marketing a “branded” district stretching west from Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center.

Consider Ladyhawk a sort of jam band for folks who probably think they're above that sort of thing. There is nothing especially complicated about the twin-guitar attack of "(I'll Be Your) Ashtray" or the nearly funky "Fear. " But these backwoods dudes have a way with catchy melodies even if their jammier tendencies finally get the best of them over the 10-plus minutes of "Ghost Blues. " Combining super-catchy tunes with loud jammy rock allows Ladyhawk to soar once again. Neva Dinova a Saddle Creek band with a new album out opens along with Jakeway at 9 p… Tickets: $10 advance $12 day of show. – Chris DrabickCleveland Jazz OrchestraAlthough Frank Zappa's music was not jazz (what was it?) lacking the improvisational element that is a cornerstone of that music (Zappa was famously precise and controlling about his music) many jazz fans love it for its adventurous complexity and its sweeping scope. So it's not a stretch for the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra to present The Jazz Unit Plays the Grand Wazoo – The Music of Frank Zappa.
