In fact the opener Howlin’ Rain might be the best embodiment of the 70s guitar solo. As recent additions to Rick Rubin’s old-school-rock label American Records the band recalls Southern grit-rock with organs and dirty guitars and never-ending instrumental climaxes. Sharing members with another big name in back-to-blues music Comets on Fire their beards and postures recalled the days of Grateful Dead and The Band when the idea of “jamming” had just been given a name and a concert was only worth the cover price if it went until dawn. The Brooklyn band MGMT brought the major label perspective on the ’70s diving headfirst into the glam-rock of Queen the early psych-rock of Blue yster Cult and in moments the disco-pop of the Bee Gees. ne of the more exciting bands to get pulled into the recent major label system MGMT emerges out of the same lineage as the Flaming Lips and Ween bands who can be funny without sacrificing their psychedelic musical innovation. Like the other bands they slather their songs with synthesizers often ridiculous comic-relief timbres and they sing satirical lyrics about being coked-up rock stars. n stage they oozed with the slickness of the industry.

‘ Just what music is covered by such a phrase is highly questionable but Plant enjoyed a deep and genuine love for and knowledge of the blues performers of the 1920s and ’30s as well as the post-war greats such as B. King and Muddy Waters. What is much more rarely acknowledged about Plant’s own work is that he translates that love into some powerful blues singing and harp playing of his own.
