‘Battle f Bands’ Target: 60000 Meals

Arnold “Paper Doll” “Captain Delicious” “Men with Big Hips” and “The Creamsicles”—all comprised of cable network and ad agency professionals who moonlight as musicians in this effort to raise money for Citymeals. Along with some six hours of rock funk and blues music a wide array of food will be on hand donated by Lucille’s. Since 1993 the Battle of the Bands has raised more than $3 million for Citymeals. All money donated from the public to Citymeals goes toward the preparation and delivery of meals for homebound elderly. The event’s sponsors make up a lengthy list: A&E Television Networks; ABC Family; Active International; BET; Bloomberg L.

“I’m getting inspectors here every two days” Tichy says. “We’ve had music for two months and nobody’s complained. Suddenly they’re saying ‘You’re not supposed to have music here. ‘” So far the Chicago Blues Cafe at the corner of East 14th Street and 136th Avenue has entertained visitors from the city’s building department the planning department plus the county fire department and the health department. And every one of those departments has found Tichy’s little cafe in violation of several laws rules codes or ordinances. The building department says he has to finish the bathroom he’s building and put up the siding on the outside walls that matches the rest of the building. Plus he should take down the signs that don’t have a permit.

They seemed to take advantage of the series of improvised jazz and blues standards like one takes advantage of an excellent movie soundtrack reveling in the ambience the music creates without necessarily regarding the expertise of the musicians behind the mood. Nate Karl 26 was one of those watching TV at the bar while sipping a beer. “I don’t know if it’s jazz or blues” Karl said “but I like that you see a variety of instruments onstage. The music is relaxing and I can still have a conversation and listen to them. The band doesn’t have much visual impact. They have clearly not set out to look trendy or make a statement. After 10-years of relative silence ayy and seeing his former Jonathan Fire*Eater bandmates go on to form the acclaimed group The Walkmen — the singer-songwriter and St. Albans School grad has formed a new band released an EP of older recordings “Cheekbone Hollows” coming out on Gypsy Eyes records April 15 and set plans to embark on his first major tour in forever under the name The Child Ballads. Recently Lupton spoke with Express about his trip back to the stage the return of once-estranged Child Ballads keyboard player Betsy Wright how Royal Trux’s art-damaged blues sound helped him to open up a wormhole in the recording studio and the music he’ll be performing with guitarist Luke Wyatt on Wednesday at the Velvet Lounge. EXPRESS: So you’ve been playing most of the songs on the “Cheekbone Hollows” EP for around four years now. Do you have any plans to write new material?LUPTN: I’m so glad you asked that. People don’t realize that because it originally only came out in England. I’ve been playing those songs in different permutations and with different musicians for quite a while.
