From their military camps Ibrahim and his early Tinariwencompatriots recorded rebellion cassettes that were distributed toTouaregs all over Africa – Nigeria Algeria Libya Mali and Chad. Many of the band’s members fought in the 1990 rebellion against theMalian government and they witnessed the 1996 burning of arms inTimbuktu which marked a new era of relative peace between theTouaregs and the national government. nce peace was declared theloose collective of musicians decided to dedicate themselves to themusic. I can understand being annoyed by repetitive distractions but the remarks belittle the efforts of a fine group of young people. How else can the band maintain excellence without practice?As the parent of a band member I can attest to the hard mental and physical work required. Band members have to balance their regular class loads practices music memorization and performance obligations. Being in the band has been one of the greatest experiences of my son’s life… I can understand being annoyed by repetitive distractions but the remarks belittle the efforts of a fine group of young people. How else can the band maintain excellence without practice?As the parent of a band member I can attest to the hard mental and physical work required. Band members have to balance their regular class loads practices music memorization and performance obligations. Being in the band has been one of the greatest experiences of my son’s life. I certainly respect anyone’s wishes not to participate in Buckeye mania and I realize that everyone has different tastes in music and sports. SC In Search of The Blues by Marybeth Hamilton The Delta blues are tangled in so much mythology that Marybeth Hamilton has to spend most of her book hacking through the undergrowth of misconception. She does an excellent job demolishing the central myth – that the blues was a uniquely ‘pure’ form of music in which the voices of uneducated black singers boomed out across the cotton fields of Mississippi. The reality is more interesting and more complex. Hamilton’s love of music shines through the book. SC The Pesthouse by Jim Crace Few contemporary novelists can find poetry in bleaker settings than Jim Crace; and this grimly futuristic piece set in a post-apocalyptic America where refugees face a desperate struggle for survival finds him at his limpid best.
