Alligator RecordsThere’ll be an unattended microphone in the Roomful of Blues horn section when they play tonight at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland. It was used by trumpeter Bob Enos who joined the band in 1981 and stayed with the hard-traveling Rhode Island blues outlet until he was found dead in a Georgia hotel room Jan. 11 after the first show of yet another tour. The cause of death is listed as suspected heart failure… Enos was the second-most senior member of the band. Lataille has been in since 1970. Enos attended the New England Conservatory of Music but Lataille says his main musical training was playing in Boston’s Combat Zone with soul and R&B bands such as The Coasters and The Viper Revue. His idol was Louis Armstrong and his piercing yet earthy tone was classic. “It’s a lost art” Howard says. Young trumpeters now mostly play jazz rather than the earthy Louis Armstrong-influenced blues style Enos favored which is “a simpler but a cooler way to think. ”“He was a brute force on the trumpet” Vachon says marveling at Enos’ “big jungle high notes.
