Elvis gets marker on Mississippi Blues Trail
USA Today – Jan 7, 2008
He first encountered the blues in Tupelo and it remained central to his music throughout his career. His early recordings helped revolutionize popular music with a unique mix of blues and country music which led many rock ‘n’ roll artists to follow his lead. “By all accounts Elvis Presley was the single greatest influence on modern-day rock ‘n’ roll in America and much of his musical inspiration drew on the Mississippi blues” Gov. Haley Barbour said in a statement Friday. The event is sponsored by the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Heritage Trails Program the Mississippi Blues Commission the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Elvis Presley Birthplace Museum. Though the least prominent member of the quartet he distinguished himself as an occasional singer of good-natured material and as an actor. Upon the group’s split Starr went solo with two novelty projects: the first an album called Sentimental Journey found him covering pre-rock standards and the second Beaucoups of Blues was a country music collection. Starr then scored Top Ten hits with two non-album singles “It Don’t Come Easy” in 1971 and “Back ff Boogaloo” in 1972. In 1973 he paired with producer Richard Perry and with assistance from the three other ex-. ” “h My My” a Top Ten hit was also included.
‘Some People Have Real Problems’
New York Times – Jan 7, 2008
” “Angels of Destruction!” worries about apocalypse and redemption. ” Any hint of pretension dissolves in Marah’s music as the Bielanko brothers’ raspy growly vocals ride roadhouse grooves. In Rolling Stonesy stomps and skiffle bounces easygoing vaudeville shuffles and driving rockabilly boogies the songs make allegorical visions sound like barroom banter. JN PARELES FRANK KIMBRUGH“Air”(Palmetto)Frank Kimbrough has a great deal of experience playing solo piano; in the liner notes to his latest release he recalls a five-year stretch early in his career when the format sustained him. Yet somehow “Air” is his first solo album. Fittingly rewardingly it’s a mature and personal reflection… The title track obviously named after the most ethereal of elements captures this feeling best. Kimbrough is ultimately more engaging though on material with some root-level relationship to the blues. He gets frisky on just a couple of originals the stridelike “Ca’lina” and a modal waltz called “The Spins” and imbues the rest of the album with a quietly rhapsodic tone. His readings of Monk’s “Coming n the Hudson” and “Jackie-ing” both resplendent in tensions hint at an elusive mastery. The album’s chief distraction for some listeners will be Mr. Kimbrough’s flashes of deference to Mr.

Arkansas Leader – Jan 7, 2008
Now there’s only Holmes who at 59 is the youngest of the bluesmen under review. He’s keeping the Bentonia sound alive and could if we’re lucky pass on this rare art form to a new generation of musicians. Another small label Bluesland Productions has issued a remarkable CD called “The Last of the Jelly Roll Kings” by two Arkansans the drummer Sam Carr and the late harmonica player Frank Frost. They hung out together near Helena for many years with Big Jack Johnson of Clarksdale. (Carr the son of blues legend Robert Nighthawk still lives on a farm near the casino in Lula Miss. ) Frost and Carr were recorded for this CD in Helena in 1993 in 1997 including several tracks at the King Biscuit Festival. This is Arkansas blues at its best: Frost was a great harmonica player (he also played guitar and organ) and Carr before he suffered a stroke a few years ago was the best drummer in the Delta.
Paul Carrack
Halifax Evening Courier – Jan 7, 2008
Paul Carrack might have played with some of music’s greats but he never forgets his Yorkshire roots (he was born in Sheffield). From the minute Paul ? with his trademark hat and sunglasses ? arrived on stage the audience (aged 40-plus) were on their feet bopping and swaying to his laid-back sound. Paul is one of music’s all-time pros and his show has class and quality stamped all over it. He has a rich voice suited to everything from jazz and soul to the blues and gospel and of course rock and pop.

Stoffels and Savage to expand their stage repertoire with ‘n…
Tonight – Jan 7, 2008
Some might be surprised to find out that the artist is also an accomplished songwriter who has been penning his own compositions for 30 years. Stoffels will present his songs in a show called n That Note at Baran’s in Cape Town from Wednesday to February 2. “The audience can expect music they would not have heard before and there are anecdotes offering insight as to how the songs originated. There is also the real story of two actors Paul Savage and myself” says Stoffels. Stoffels will appear on piano while Savage will play the bass. The show will also feature Adrian Bekker on drums. The idea for n That Note came about when Stoffels recently reconnected with Savage… thers I have managed to retain. I guess I remember some tuneswhen I recognise it as something familiar. n That Note will feature songs with titles such as Cross That Bridge A Peace f Mind Love Without The Blues ne Step At A Time and Time Bomb. Although Stoffels talks with great enthusiasm about the instruments he can play (piano guitar blues harmonica the pennywhistle the flute concertina and mandolin) it is more difficult for him to pin down his stylistic influences. “I know that there is a strong spiritual influence. “I attended church and Sunday school and learnt hymns. I am also a jazz lover.
