The term doesn’t refer to a distinct style of music and the meaning of “blue-eyed soul” has evolved over decades. riginally the term was associated with mid-1960s white artists who performed soul and rhythm and blues music that was similar to the raw expressive music of Motown. Many blue-eyed soul singers have been described as “sounding black” because they had a full voice with a throaty resonant timbre. To a lesser extent the term has been applied to singers in other music genres that are influenced by soul music (such as dirty pop urban music and hip-hop soul). Current artists who have been labelled blue-eyed soul include Christina Aguilera Joss Stone American Idol winner Taylor Hicks and Anastacia.

The Beaux Arts Trio plays classical music April 2 while hot jazz pianists Hank Jones Eric Reed Carl “Sonny” Leyland and Marcus Roberts perform solo or as duos in the Piano Showdown. The music ends April 5 with high school jazz bands from the Swing Central competition opening for the premiere of a commissioned piece by Wycliffe Gordon and a performance by the Sparrow Quartet with Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck (a banjo Celtic and Appalachian band with a Far East influence). pening weekend will focus on “World Music Classical and American Roots”; the middle weekend will be “For the Love of Singers” with performers such as McDonald and Angelique Kidjo and will include the 15th Annual American Traditions Competition for Singers; and closing weekend features select jazz and Americana shows.
