This six-track EP for Target Stores is smart and wildly unpredictable mixing Bing Crosby’s “Mele Kalikimaka” with Shane McGowan’s boozy lament “Fairytale of New York” and Darlene Love’s classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). ” It’s my favorite new holiday disc. “Christmas Song” Mannheim Steamroller Mannheim Steamroller reinvented Christmas music back in 1984 with “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas” and has been riding that sleigh ever since. “Christmas Song” is the eighth Mannheim holiday set and the Christmas songbook has been pretty much steamrollered to exhaustion… Part of Capitol’s Ultra Lounge series 15 rounds of holiday cheer featuring such carolers as Dean Martin Lena Horne Nat “King” Cole Kay Starr Julie London Bing Crosby and Ferrante and Teicher. “Home For Christmas” on Rounder. An unusually eclectic Christmas choir with tracks by Wilson Pickett Roomful of Blues Riders in the Sky Leon Redbone Irma Thomas and Deana Carter. “Classic Soft Rock Christmas” on Time Life. A soundtrack for dozing in front of the fireplace with such mellow jollies as Air Supply Christopher Cross America Chicago Carly Simon and Hall and ates. “Malt Shop Memories Christmas” on Time Life. Forgotten Christmas cheer from such first-generation rockers as Frankie Lymon Ricky Nelson Bobby Darin the Four Seasons Little Eva and the Everly Brothers.
