Ringold however is paying close attention to the weather. The music is the major outdoor element of the festival and some rain is forecast tonight. Jazz and blues music is the most popular genre represented on the lineup with performances by GBC Jazz rchestra Southern Comfort FreeWorld The Memphis Hurricanes Charlie Wood Trio the Billy Gibson Band Sidney Kirk Band and The Jazz rchestra of the Delta with vocalist Sandra Dudley. ther performers are Susan Marshall Band Di Anne Price and Her Boyfriends and the Memphis Sounds. Classical artists scheduled include guitarist Lily Afshar Hot Sonata Trio and the Memphis Harp Ensemble (with ten harps). Dance troupes scheduled to perform include the New Ballet Ensemble and the Pyramid Dance Company which brings Persian Indian Latin and gypsy moves to the mainstage on Sunday. Though the street will be closed to traffic the trolley will continue to operate.

Johansen said “Mara” was an organic progression. “All through my life I’ve always listened to music I’m not playing” he said. “So when I was doing rock ‘n’ roll at the beginning I was listening to really mostly kind of country blues and Chicago blues. Then I started listening to a lot of kind of jump jazz and ended up doing that later with the Poindexter thing” meaning Buster Poindexter Mr. Johansen’s pompadoured alter ego who flourished in the late ’80s. Last year even as Mr. Johansen was touring with a new version of his early-’70s band the New York Dolls whose lipstick-smeared clatter prefigured punk he spent a lot of time listening to slow classical music.

“It is so good for people of all ages and it has the ability to keep people well and healthy. “Another activity Harper said he enjoys is playing in a band with his four brothers called the Harper Brothers Band. The group plays blues music at festivals including the Hot August Blues festival at Kentucky Lake. The band mostly performs Harper’s blues compositions. Part of Harper’s blues influence came from his mother a pianist and his father who played the harmonica. “She could play the boogie like you would not believe. I loved it” Harper said.
