C Weekly – Oct 25, 2007
It is a music that makes a combination of all the feelings of life. And in that combination there is sadness she says but there is also joy and humor. The inevitable emotional highs and lows that characterize life dwell at the music’s core. “The story is very similar to the blues” Mariza says. “That’s why I sometimes say fado is the Portuguese blues. Fado’s complexity is in the humor emotion and saudade—a Portuguese word that cannot be easily translated into English but which alludes to a kind of crushing nostalgia joy and longing—that characterizes its lyrics and the tremendous emotional range in its singer’s voice. Although she grew up immersed in the sights and sounds of traditional fado Mariza who was born in Mozambique and raised in Lisbon says her own fado was also influenced by the international voices of the time.

“I started learning about it and I realized how contemporary blues artists had taken so much from earlier blues artists” said the singer and guitarist. “In the teens and in the ’20s blues was always around and it had a lot of violin a lot of banjo whatever instruments people had around. “The West Coast style of blues was geared around dance music which was swing — the guitar didn’t come to prominence as a lead instrument for quite a few years. ”It’s this retro approach that ’Donnell has applied to his band the Nouveaux Honkies. The group which headlines today’s Downtown Friday event in Vero Beach doesn’t play your standard electric 12-bar blues with interminable solos. Nor is it mournful acoustic Delta or country blues. The Honkies play uptempo swing-style blues.

Seattle Post Intelligencer – Oct 25, 2007
I’m this big ugly tattooed guy and people tend to judge a book by its cover which is a mistake. “So what saved me and what gave me a career was that the public embraced me and supported me. Even when the record labels let me down the music never did. And having fun is what it’s all about for the blues-rocker who took his name from a song by funk star Bernie Worrell. “I’m never going to get on stage and have a bad show no matter what happens” Chubby said. “There are a lot of artists who get on stage and they’re miserable.

We didn't really know too much about the infinite myriad of influences underneath. And so it was an absolute coup that T Bone came on the scene. ” Krauss 36 had already worked with Burnett on albums including the multimillion-selling neo-Appalachian soundtrack album for ” Brother Where Art Thou?” Plant and Burnett who were both born in 1948 are connoisseurs of older American music who share a taste for the deepest blues. Plant came to realize however that he had long focused on African-American music while he had virtually ignored the other side of the racial divide Krauss's stomping ground and part of Burnett's down-home foundations. “I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about American music but I'd missed out on an entire area” Plant said. “I now know that American music is a total panorama. I was cutting it off and thinking it was redneck hell down there.
