This was the first time that I played the central role in a performance” explains Yadav who had earlier come to Pune in 1986 along with Asha Bhosale and R D Burman for a show called The Asha Bhosale Nite. n another occasion he was one amongst those who crooned Gaata rahe mera dil at a Lata Mangeshkar concert. However it was Monday’s feat called Instrumental Blues that left the audience in a trance. “Pune has always been close to my heart as it is home to an intelligent section of music afficianados. They know exactly what an ardent music lover should know this intertwined with the response that my performance has evoked gives me extreme gratification” exults Yadav. Still while rock ‘n’ roll holds few prejudices against youth there tends to be something about the blues that calls for an approach that is tempered by if not age at least some catalogue of heartbreak and pain. “It means more to me now—I get it on a different level than I did when I was 22” Berlin concedes. “Definitely blues is the kind of music that living it is paramount so I’m always a little bit leery when hearing about the next 14-year-old blues superstar. I’m just like ‘h yeah? What’s he going to write about: pissing his pants?’ If you haven’t lived it even if you learn every Stevie Ray Vaughan lick there ever was I don’t think it’s the same thing as having something to say. ”With the blues having something to say has often resulted in the creation of something new. Look to the Rolling Stones who started out playing blues covers before taking those influences and evolving into a gritty rock ‘n’ roll band in the early ‘70s or the twisted rambling of the White Stripes in today’s music scene where Jack White freely mixes blues with country and anything else that strikes his fancy. Slim points out that there’s an element of blues to be found in all sorts of old school country singers from Hank Williams to Johnny Cash to David Allan Coe.

There is a real worry again that Sony’spropensity to invest in proprietary technologies will backfire. Remember theMiniDisk? Neither does anybody else. Ditto Atrac the Sony digital musicformat eclipsed by Apple’s iPod offerings. In the same vein Sony’s decisionto pour millions of dollars into developing the PlayStation 3’s hugelyadvanced Cell processor now looks daft given the way that Nintendo’s Wii hasproved such a triumph. Betamax was famously superior to VHS on every front bar one: price. The sameis true of Blu-ray – each disk can hold at least 60 per cent moreinformation than an HD-DVD equivalent. However Blu-ray players command ahefty premium on their HD-DVD peers.
