SATURDAY NITE FISH FRY: DIRT BAND BLUES (7 ARTS) :: eJazzNews.com :…

King epitomizes diligence and discipline besides having focus and total clarity of what it is that Saturday Nite Fish Fry should be and do. ne must then surround themselves with individuals who are extremely talented positive productive and ?coachable? and a quick glance at the line-up assembled tells me that King has succeeded also in this department. The final piece is of course the music itself and you know right away that ?Dirt Road Blues? will be unique entertaining and well-received by critics and fans alike. Mind you when I read the list of songs a little voice inside me went ?h oh!? But once you hear each and every song there is no sign of cynicism or negativity left as the creative re-arrangements of well-worn classics always gets kudos from me (in most cases). To many people seeing Saturday Nite Fish Fry ?live? or hearing them on the radio the band is all about the highly charismatic and powerful singer Shakura S?Aida and one can?t fault this assessment as Shakura is Star Calibre. But it really is a band that functions as a result of several ingredients. Besides Bill King?s musical talents and blueprints for the band and Shakura?s vocals and presence we also have the top-calibre talents of Neil Chapman (guitar) Howard Ayee (bass) Mike Sloski (Bass) John Johnson (alto sax) Bob Brough (tenor sax) Chris Gale (baritone sax) and William Sperandi (trumpet).

Sun kisses music fans at Reading
BBC News – Aug 27, 2007
For 80000 music fans gathered by the Thames for the Reading Festival their numbers came up. The event climaxed on Sunday night with The Smashing Pumpkins and the nasal tones of singer Billy Corgan. The band’s performance on the main stage included heavy rock beat tracks like Zero an echoing guitar version of the Star Spangled Banner and Pink Floyd-esque tones. Along with the sunshine The Nine Inch Nails who preceded the Pumpkins were another of the festival’s highlights. Singer Trent Reznor also showed his versatility by switching from electro-rock numbers such as Closer to God to much more violent tracks… It was almost a relief when night really fell and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers added their Californian spice to the mix earlier in the festival. Bassist Michael Balzary congratulated Sheffield United on beating West Brom that afternoon with a cry of ‘Go Blades go!”He then proceeded to lock swords with guitarist John Frusciante in a bout of sparring that led into Californication. Hurdy gurdyThe Chillis switched from funky blues numbers like Scar Tissue to the more gentle rhythms of Snow (Hey h) and By the Way before coming back for an encore of Give It Away. Singer Anthony Kiedis thanked individual members of the audience: “You in the blue. Thanks for being there.

Were we able to walk into a 1920s plantation juke-joint or even a South Side Chicago club in the late ’40s it would feel so alien in some ways that it might as well be another planet. But the music would sound familiar. The blues — the music that descendants of African slaves laughed and cried to in the South and that their children took with them up North — is the common gene that now binds most American popular music from jazz and soul to rock and hip-hop. Here as part of a multi-part series on building a blues library the spotlight is on five influential artists who exemplify the urban strain of the blues from Bessie Smith to John Lee Hooker. Five more will come in a future installment. These recordings made from 1920s New York to 1970s Chicago spurred cultural sea changes.
