Wolf or Chester Arthur Burnett is a West Point native… n Thursday you can catch the unveiling of West Point’s marker on the Blues Trail of Mississippi a statewide project memorializing the rich musical history found in Mississippi. This as well as the bulk of Point City Fest’s other events will be held at Waverly Waters in West Point. Headlined by Hubert Sumlin guitarist for Howlin’ Wolf’s band the lineup of performers is sure to impress even those unfamiliar with the pillars of blues music. “Steady Rollin’” Bob Margolin and his All-star Band will be performing along side Kenny Brown The Burnside Exploration (including R. Burnside’s sons Gary and Cedric) and Blues ld Stand among others. Any who fear a scheduling conflict with Thursday’s LSU game do not fret.

Memphis Minnie considered one of the greatest female blues artists will have a marker placed near her grave in the Delta town of Walls. Catfish Alley an area of Columbus where many blues musicians played will be recognized. Fifteen other Blues Trail markers have been placed around the state to honor legendary musicians or places important to the history of blues music. The Mississippi Blues Commission plans for more than 100 markers to be put up across the state.

The songs were more imaginative than the above formula suggests and used sophisticated harmony influenced by both jazz and classical music. The Pan Alley was the area in New York City where many popular songs from the 1920s to 1950s were composed and published. Meanwhile the Blues are defined as a mixture of African influences brought by slaves to North America work songs used on the plantations and Western musical elements. Admission is free and performances are appropriate for all ages. Seven stages of performances include an international variety of folk music and an array of genres that encompasses singer-songwriters bluegrass blues European folk dances African storytelling belly-dancing and much more. ne stage is devoted to participatory dance and another stage will host the Festival’s fourth Performer Showcase which highlights new singer-songwriters. Many performances will be interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing. The Festival also includes a juried craft fair with more than 40 artisans selling their hand-made crafts and more than 100 Community Tables sponsored by local non-profits. There’s also a games area for young children next door to the Grassy Nook Stage that features child-oriented performances.
