Spinners working their way to PPAC
Providence Journal – Jul 19, 2007
Discussion of R&BAnd don’t forget – before the Spinners show at PPAC Dr. Ed Coates and the Rhode Island Rhythm and Blues Preservation Society are holding a panel discussion on the roots and branches of rhythm and blues music along with a performance by the RIRBPS Band. Coates and his group have devoted gobs of time and effort to promoting and preserving the heritage of rhythm and blues in Rhode Island and the black culture that fostered it and was nurtured by it from the ’40s through the ’60s. Their efforts have been at least partially rewarded by the permanent designation of August as Rhode Island Rhythm and Blues Heritage Month. The discussion is at Providence Black Rep 276 Westminster St. Providence tomorrow at 4 and it’s free.

Wood said originally one band was going to perform but four others heard about it and asked if they could join as well. The five bands will then compete in the Newport Jazz festival a week later.

The whole blues purist thing cracks me up. I’m not an old black man from Mississippi. I’m a middle class white kid from a little town in South Jersey. “I’m not going to be a mimic; I’m going to be true to who I am and play what’s in my heart.
