Chris also plays trumpet and piano sings and is well-known for his compositions frequently played on Jazz FM and Radio Two. Joining the versatile performer is Chris’ wife Simone who sings and plays lead alto saxophone in the band Five Star Swing. The seven-piece band will deliver classic pieces from Sinatra Glenn Miller Ella Fitzgerald Nat King Cole and Jools Holland-style rhythm and blues music. The band features five saxophones male and female vocalists multi-instrumentalists and a dynamic rhythm section. In recent months Five Star Swing has played alongside Spice Girl Mel C and on BBC’s Children in Need and put on a concert for Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The performance takes place on August 2 at 8pm.

“Women conformed to certain roles and so did the men. Settling in Toronto eight years ago Silveira began to perform around the city identifying as a lesbian. The mixture of blues and folk Silveira played was partly a response to the pressure he felt to fit in. “Unfortunately women tend to impose these ideals on themselves of being meek and subdued” said Silveira. “When you look at Sarah McLachlan and Courtney Love who’s referred to as a bitch?”The end of a six-year relationship and the death of Silveira’s grandmother brought on a deep depression. Two and a half years ago Silveira broke down and finally accepted that he was a transgender male. Silveira was content with the thought that this would mean the end of his music career… “I thought I would get a day job and play music on the weekends but that I was never going to make it big as a musician. The decision not only improved Silveira’s quality of life but also his craft. He ditched the mellow folk music he had been writing and switched to the rock and roll sound that he’d always loved. The music became stronger and more personal. Rosie Lopez vice president of Tommy Boy Entertainment passed on the Cliks’ initial album.

You seem to know as much about the musicians on Ricky Jay Plays Poker as you do about the game and the various hands and cheating techniques they sing about. Not as much although I absolutely love the music and I?ve been compiling gambling tunes for years for my own amusement. I?m really interested in so-called old-timey music and blues and I spent a large part of my early career opening for a wide variety of bands so I have pretty eclectic taste. The history of cheating is something I am truly passionate about. I have many more songs in my files about gambling in general and many other poker tunes but this collection of songs seems to mesh. We were very lucky to get the licensing on everything we wanted with one exception. The Ray Charles estate wouldn?t let us use ?The Cincinnati Kid? but because of that I got to include Frank Krumit?s ?Dolan?s Poker Party? with his marvelous little game from the 1920s.
