Muldaur keeps sensual songs alive on latest blues release
Canada.com – Jul 26, 2007
Muldaur we know from all the way back to her jug band and her solo days has long fostered a fondness for the great blues singers of the ’20s and ’30s. In her CD notes here she talks of running away from home — all seven blocks of it — where do you run away to after all when you already live in Greenwich Village? — and starting her education listening to a large collection of jazz and blues. Muldaur mines that education for tunes by Mamie Smith Sippie Wallace Victoria Spivey Ma Rainey and of course Bessie Smith. There’s Down Home Blues with its heavy cymbal work and lots of horns blatting; Up the Country Blues with more raucous horns and those famous lines that Canned Heat borrowed back in the ’60s; a duet with Bonnie Raitt on Separation Blues; and her advice to keep a good man if you can in A Good Man is Hard to Find a Bessie Smith tune that later provided the title for Flannery ‘Connor’s famous short story.
