Hard Candye
Now Toronto – Jul 12, 2007
You’d think anyone familiar with the music of Bessie Smith Big Mama Thornton or even Dinah Washington would appreciate that Candye Kane’s boisterously bawdy side is precisely what connects her to the long line of badass blues women of the past. But apparently many are not amused by Candye Kane classics like the heavily downloaded Masturbation Blues. utside of her San Diego home base (where Kane’s snagged the best-blues- band hardware at the San Diego Music Awards seven times) the singer gets no props from many of the self-styled keepers of the blues tradition. The Blues Foundation has never presented her with a W. “I’ve actually never even been nominated for a Blues Foundation award not once” clarifies Kane before a show in Idaho “And that’s after touring for 15 years and releasing eight albums while artists like Javina Magness and Ana Popovic have put out one or maybe two records and won awards.

Washington Post – Jul 12, 2007
“At 48 Stuart is no longer the young rebel out to shake up Nashville or the country hitmaker of the early ’90s (“Hillbilly Rock” “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’”) though he still has that pile of spiky hair like a rooster caught in the rain. He’s been on a creative roll recently releasing four albums and a book of photography since 2005. His records touch on gospel bluegrass blues rockabilly even Native American music. His latest “Compadres” is an anthology of duets with the likes of Cash B. King Merle Haggard the Staple Singers Loretta Lynn and Steve Earle. As he browsed the exhibit one afternoon he’d latch onto an artifact and launch into another story.

Eyesrolling veins bulging he took off at the Jazz Café with a Little Waltersong Just Your Fool as if he had a whole pack of hellhounds on his trail. With hismane of silver hair he now looks like a leaner craggier version of BillClinton while his haunted howl of a voice is deeply etched with thecontours of experience. But despite the long history Hammond is still on a learning curve. His newalbum Push Comes to Shove released this week was produced by thePhiladelphia hip hop-bluesman G Love and features five of Hammond’scompositions. He has only recently taken up songwriting and he announcednumbers such as Eyes Behind Your Head and You Know That’s Coldwith a mixture of pride and mild incredulity.
