“I can’t remember exactly what gig it was but a couple of years ago I was at a festival and I got up and jammed with (John) Mayall and he called out a key and counted to four and off we went” Trout recalled in a recent interview. “And the audience just seemed to love the jam session. I came out of it and started thinking ‘How come nobody has done a CD where they just have a jam session and they record it and see what they come up with?’ The original thought behind it was I started thinking in jazz music and blues music that the jam session is an honored tradition and those are the only two genres you’ll find it. ” Trout ran his idea by his label (Ruf Records) and then began calling favorite musicians he hoped would participate. At the heart of his idea was to write and record each song over the course of a single recording session. The lineup of players that play with Trout on tracks across the 13-track disc is impressive including Mayall Jeff Healey Coco Montoya Guitar Shorty and Joe Bonamassa. Not bad for a New Jersey-born boy who spent years as a sideman playing guitar for the likes of John Lee Hooker and Big Mama Thornton as well as a member of both Canned Heat and Mayall’s Bluesbreakers before embarking on a solo career in 1990.
