Saturday night you can hear the voice attached to that marquee name when the blues songstress plays at the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel lounge. This gig amounts to somewhat of a victory lap for the singer. It comes hot on the heels of her May 10 win at the 2007 Blues Music Awards where she beat out some stiff competition (including Shemekia Copeland Marcia Ball and Memphis powerhouse Barbara Blue) for the 2007 Contemporary Female Artist of the Year Award. Not bad for a grandma. Looking at her photos you’d never know this woman has put in a 30-odd-year career belting out the blues. Raised in the gritty music haven of Detroit Magness possesses a sultry smoky voice infused with jazz blues and soul influences.
